Wikis are cool. This is one.

There are so many "flavors" of wiki these days that it can be really tough to figure out which wiki is right for your needs. Start with the WikiMatrix to get a sense of what does what.

Here's a quick guide to thinking about using a wiki in your office.

Security. Will you be putting sensitive data on the wiki?
Internal/External. Depending on your security needs and your IT help, consider whether your wiki will be hosted internally or externally.
Budget. Do you have a few bucks to spare for a wiki solution, or do you need DIY?
Ease of use: Do you/your staff know basic hmtl (or are willing to learn), or do you want a Word-like interface?
Media capability: Will you be using screenshots or video on the wiki?

Practical tips:

The big gripe that I hear when implementing a wiki is that it's too confusing. Setting up a good structure early will help reduce this frustration
Use it appropriately. Staff have many data management tools on hand. Wiki is just one and it's not a silver bullet. Use a wiki for documentation and policy/procedure. Screenshots and screencasts are great for documentation.
Adaptation rates can be slow when people are confused. Overcome this by sending them to the wiki whenever practicable. Rather than answering questions about policy/procedure, ask if they've checked the wiki. When someone learns something new, ask them to document it on the wiki.
